A Scrip Fundraiser?  What Is It and How Does It Work?

What Is Scrip?
Scrip is a term that means “substitute money.” When you purchase scrip, you’re purchasing negotiable gift certificates and prepaid cards that are used just like cash! You can use them to buy everyday items such as food, clothing, and other essentials, or give them away as gifts for others to use.   With every purchase, you earn revenue for our school, and the best part is that scrip cards don’t cost you any more than what you get in return! You help our school earn money just by using scrip cards to make your purchases!

How Does Scrip Work?
The Great Lakes Scrip Center (GL Scrip) acts on our behalf to purchase large quantities of scrip from grocery stores, department stores, and other retailers.   Because scrip is purchased with cash up front, the participating retailers offer a substantial discount.  Our school then purchases scrip from the Great Lakes Center at a discount and resells the certificates/gift cards to families such as yours at face value.  The discount our school receives from GL Scrip becomes revenue to us.

Brown’s Auto (and associated stores), Candy Town USA, Gainans Floral, McDonalds, Scheels, and Stella’s Kitchen and Bakery are local businesses that we deal with directly using the same principal.  Cash up front buys an equal cash value, and your school earns a percentage.  Brown’s recently changed to allow an individual to go directly to them and simply say you want to apply your bill to Billings Christian School’s Scrip program.  You pay them the full amount, and then they mail our school the discount.  No more need to pre­-buy a card.  It’s easy and helps our school!

Scrip is a “Shopping Cart Fundraiser.”
Scrip is a popular fundraiser because families don’t have to sell anything.  Revenue is brought into the school through regular household purchases, which would be made anyway! Groceries, clothing, toys, gifts, and even gasoline can be purchased with scrip.
